Entrenched Resistance- short charcoal stop motion animation

In this short animation titled ‘entrenched resistance’ made by Rachel Hogg in 2020. The artist explores charcoal drawing and stop motion, a process inspired by South African artist William Kentridge. A process which involved reworking and photographing the drawings again and again to create motion. The works build on a selection of earlier drawings done by the artist whilst studying the relationship between nature and the manmade.
In this animation the artist was drawn to the materials of charcoal because of its flexibility, easy manipulation, accessibility and the dynamic edge to black and white drawings. ‘Entrenched resistance’ illustrates the pressures put on plants by climate change and human interference, highlighting their amazing ability to evolve and resist extinction.
The artists fascination with plant evolution and seed dispersing techniques, led her to investigate the strengths and qualities of plants and the human relationship with plants through telling stories depicting plants as the protagonist. Additionally, using charm inspired by British illustrator Heath Robinson, to make difficult topics such as habitat loss, foreign plant species and climate change, more accessible for viewers to explore.
